Where did my family come from in Italy?
On site one day, I got into a conversation with one of the contractors I normally work with. I told him of my pursuit to become a professional genealogist and he said he had always wanted to know more about his dad's side of the family and where in Italy they had come from. Since his name was not common, I asked him if he knew his grandfather's name. He did so I got out my phone and typed "Bart Mazzariello" into familysearch.org app.
My search came up with a find a grave entry for Bart Mazzariello. He confirmed that his grandfather had lived in Vegas, so I figured I was on the right track. He also told me that the family settled in New York before moving west. I next looked for Bart with his parents on the 1930 census.
"Your great-grandfather was named Alfonso," I told him.
"I have never heard of him. I wonder if my dad knows that."
I continued to look between working and found some more information. Taking out a sheet of paper I wrote Alfredo's information from his WWII draft card, which includes where he was born. I wrote down his description as well as his occupation: Baker. With another short search, I found Alfonso's obituary which is on his find a grave page.
In a little less then an hour between my work I managed to solve my friend's question of where his family was originally from. Boscoreale, Italy, which is close to Pompeii in the greater Naples metropolitan area.
We still need more indepth study, but my friend now knows more about his family and answered his question about where he came from in Italy.
